The Only Equation That Actually Matters

🧮 An NFL player earns millions and is bankrupt within a decade. A schoolteacher earns $60,000 and retires a millionaire. Neither is a fluke, and neither has anything to do with income. There's one equation underneath both — it has three variables, and none of them is 'salary.'

💡 Key idea

You don't get rich by what you make. You get rich by what you KEEP.

🧠 Why it matters

Wealth = (Income − Expenses) × Time. Doesn't matter if you make $300k — if you spend $305k, your wealth is NEGATIVE. The gap between income and expenses is the only fuel your wealth engine runs on.

🌍 In the real world

👀 NFL average career = 3.3 years. ~16% of players go bankrupt within 12 years of retiring despite millions earned. Meanwhile, schoolteachers and janitors regularly retire as quiet millionaires by widening the income–expense gap and investing it for 40 years.

📌 Takeaways

  • Income alone doesn't build wealth
  • The gap (income − expenses) is your only fuel
  • Wealth = gap × time × return

✅ Test yourself

Person A makes $200k, spends $200k. Person B makes $60k, spends $45k. Who builds wealth faster?
  1. A — bigger salary
  2. B — has a positive gap
  3. Neither
  4. Depends on credit score

Answer: B · B — has a positive gap

A's gap = $0. B saves $15k/yr. Over 30 years at 8% = ~$1.7M. Gap wins every time.

Easiest lever to widen the gap if income is hard to grow?
  1. Take more risk
  2. Cut your top 3 expenses
  3. Day trade
  4. Lottery

Answer: B · Cut your top 3 expenses

The top 3 expenses (housing, transport, food) are usually about 60% of spend. A 10% cut there beats 10 small cuts elsewhere.
