Chart Patterns: The Classics

🔺 Traders swear they can see the future in shapes — triangles, flags, and something called a 'head and shoulders' that has nothing to do with shampoo. Here are the classics actually worth knowing.

💡 Key idea

Head & shoulders / double top = reversal hints. Triangles = coiling before a breakout. Flags = pause then continue.

🧠 Why it matters

Chart patterns are recurring shapes that hint at what price might do next. HEAD AND SHOULDERS (a peak, a higher peak, a lower peak) often signals a top/reversal. A DOUBLE TOP (two failed pushes at the same high) also hints at reversal; a DOUBLE BOTTOM is its bullish mirror. TRIANGLES show price coiling tighter until it breaks out one way. A FLAG is a brief pause within a strong trend before it continues. None are guarantees — they're probabilities the crowd often acts on.

🌍 In the real world

💡 Patterns can be self-fulfilling: when thousands of traders spot the same 'head and shoulders' and all sell, their selling is what actually pushes price down. The pattern 'works' partly because everyone believes it will.

📌 Takeaways

  • Head & shoulders / double tops hint at reversals
  • Triangles = price coiling toward a breakout
  • Patterns are probabilities, partly self-fulfilling

✅ Test yourself

A 'head and shoulders' pattern often signals...
  1. A guaranteed rally
  2. A potential top/reversal
  3. A dividend
  4. Nothing at all

Answer: B · A potential top/reversal

It's a classic reversal pattern hinting a top may be forming.

A triangle pattern usually means price is...
  1. Coiling tighter before a breakout
  2. Already crashed
  3. Paying a dividend
  4. Frozen forever

Answer: A · Coiling tighter before a breakout

Triangles show price compressing until it breaks out in one direction.

Part of WHY chart patterns work is...
  1. The SEC enforces them
  2. They're self-fulfilling — many traders act on the same shape
  3. They're 100% accurate
  4. Magic

Answer: B · They're self-fulfilling — many traders act on the same shape

When enough traders see and act on the same pattern, their collective action helps make it happen.
