Life Insurance: Term vs Whole

⚰️ Life insurance is wildly oversold, mostly because the people selling it earn fat commissions on the expensive kind. The version most people actually need is cheap, simple, and the one salespeople are least excited to talk about.

💡 Key idea

For most people with dependents, cheap TERM life is the right call. Whole life costs far more and is heavily commissioned.

🧠 Why it matters

Life insurance replaces your income for the people who depend on it if you die. TERM life covers you for a set period (say 20 years) for a low price — pure protection, no frills. WHOLE / permanent life lasts forever and builds a 'cash value,' but costs many times more and is heavily pushed partly for its commissions. For most people with dependents, cheap TERM life — enough to cover the years your family relies on your income — is the sensible choice. If no one depends on your income, you may not need life insurance at all.

🌍 In the real world

💡 A young parent can often buy a 20-year, $500,000 term policy for a modest monthly premium — covering exactly the years the kids and mortgage need protecting. The whole-life version of similar coverage can cost many times more, which is precisely why it's pushed so hard.

📌 Takeaways

  • Life insurance replaces income for dependents
  • Term = cheap, set period, pure protection
  • Whole/permanent costs far more; most people just need term
