The Business Cycle — Boom, Bust, Repeat
🎢 Economies don't grow in a tidy straight line — they boom, get cocky, crash, panic, and then do it all over again, forever. The business cycle is basically capitalism's mood swings, and everyone acts genuinely surprised every single time.
💡 Key idea
The economy cycles through expansion → peak → contraction → trough, over and over. Booms and busts are both temporary.
🧠 Why it matters
The BUSINESS CYCLE is the economy's repeating rhythm of four phases: EXPANSION (growth, hiring, optimism), PEAK (things overheat, prices and confidence run hot), CONTRACTION / RECESSION (slowdown, layoffs, fear), and TROUGH (the bottom, where recovery begins). It's driven by the natural swing between greed and fear, spending and saving. No one can perfectly time it, but understanding roughly which phase you're in helps you stay calm — booms don't last forever, and neither do busts.
🌍 In the real world
💡 In the late stage of every boom, people declare the cycle 'dead' and that growth will last forever — right before the bust. In the depths of every bust, they swear it'll never recover — right before it does. The cycle's most reliable feature is people forgetting it exists.
